Zunyi Medical University
Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University (AHZMU) is a hospital directly affiliated to Zunyi Medical University, a university co-sponsored by the National Health Commission (formerly the National Health and Family Planning Commission) and the People's Government of Guizhou Province. Previously affiliated to Dalian Medical College, the hospital was relocated southward in 1969 to support the Third Front Construction and started to use its current name. It is the first top tertiary comprehensive hospital in Guizhou province. It is designated as the construction unit of the national project of improving the diagnosis and treatment capacity of complex diseases (early diagnosis and precise treatment of malignant tumor direction).
AHZMU has a total construction area of 310,000 square meters. The number of inpatient beds is 2000, while it offered in practice 2800 beds. There are 17 administrative departments, 7 specialized subordinate hospitals, 50 clinical and medical departments, 12 technological departments. It has high-end medical equipment such as PET-CT, Da Vinci Robot etc.
Among 4,111 hospital staff, there are 826 staff members with senior professional titles, 1 selected candidates of Young and Middle-aged Leading Innovative Talents in Scientific and Technological in the national "Innovative Talent Promotion Plan" , 1 selected candidates of National New Century Talents Project, 2 selected candidates of the New Century Excellent Talents Project of the Ministry of Education, 3 selected candidates of provincial Innovative Talents Project (Ten and hundred level), and 12 provincial Outstanding Science and Technology Talents. There are 4 outstanding experts with great contribution honored by NHC (National Health Commission), 16 stuff receiving the government special allowance from the State Council, 11 stuff receiving government special allowances from the provincial government, and 17 provincial core experts and provincial management experts.
In the first half of 2021, AHZMU handled 1.113 million outpatient and emergency visits, discharged 65,900 patients and operated 39,400 cases, and the average days of hospitalization is 8.06. The hospital is committed to carrying out cutting-edge technologies. Its penetrating flap technology and minimally invasive cervical spine technology take the lead in China, and the early cancer screening by gastrointestinal endoscopy and neuro-endoscopy are at the leading level in southwest China. The hospital attaches great importance to organ donation and transplantation, which is designated by the Ministry of Health as the first batch of hospitals for kidney transplantation in China. It’s the first medical institution with heart transplantation qualification in the province. AHZMU has successfully carried out the first case of salvage liver transplantation, living kidney transplantation and the first kidney transplantation from organ donor sources in Guizhou Province. So far, a total of 205 cases of organ donation have been completed and 609 large organs have been obtained, 254 kidney transplants and 72 liver transplants have been completed in AHZMU. It is designated by the NHC (former Ministry of Health) as 11 national training bases, including the training base for gastrointestinal endoscopy diagnosis and treatment technology. There are 10 provincial medical quality control centers in AHZMU, including the anesthesia quality control center, and 11 provincial specialty training bases, including the training base for intensive care specialist nurses.
It has set up a complete clinical medical education system, which was one of the first batch of demonstrative centers for national clinical education and training. The Clinical Medicine in AHZMU is a national first-level undergraduate construction program. Clinical Medicine, Anesthesiology and Nursing Specialties are National Characteristic Specialties, Anesthesia Pharmacology is a State-level Best Curriculum, the Medical Simulation Center is a National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. The Clinical Medicine has passed the certification of clinical medicine program by the Ministry of Education of China, which is valid for 7 years. The hospital has been granted one second prize of National Teaching Achievement. AHZMU boasts a complete set of disciplines, including 2 first-level disciplines of master's degree programs and 2 professional master's degree programs, covering 22 second-level disciplines and Professional degree programs. It is the workstation for doctoral students of Soochow University. The hospital is the first batch of national standardized residency training bases and has won the first place in the supervision inspection of residency training in Guizhou for consecutively 4 years. Cardiovascular medicine, general surgery and pediatric anesthesiology were designated as national specialist standardized training bases. Its specialty training bases of internal medicine, emergency medicine and general medicine is the key specialty bases for residency training in China.
AHZMU is the branch of 3 National Institutes for Clinical Research. It has 2 provincial Key Laboratories, 3 provincial Clinical Medical Research Centers, 1 Collaborative Innovation Center Co-sponsored by Province and Ministry, 2 provincial "2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers", 2 provincial Talent Bases, 14 provincial Science and Technology Innovation Talent Teams, 4 provincial Key Laboratories and Engineering Research Centers in Higher Education and 5 provincial Teams of Scientific and Technological Innovation Talents in Higher Education.
In the past 5 years, the hospital has acquired 143 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, ranking first within the province in total. It received 25 provincial and ministerial awards for scientific and technological achievements, including 3 first-class awards for provincial scientific and technological progress, and 42 national invention patents. The Clinical Medicine discipline in AHZMU ranked in the global top 1% in ESI, and was selected as a domestic first-class discipline in Guizhou Province. In the Academic Ranking of Specialties in Chinese Universities compiled by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, the Clinical Medicine of AHZMU was 52th, which is the No.1 in Guizhou. The hospital has 3 National Key Clinical Specialties, 20 Provincial Key Clinical Disciplines (specialties). Department of Plastic Surgery and Department of Tuberculosis ranked the national top 10 in terms of Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) for Chinese Hospitals by Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in 2017 and 2018, which are the only two disciplines selected in the top 10 in our province so far. The number of disciplines selected in the top 100 in the past years is the highest in the province's medical institutions. Among the 31 disciplines evaluated in 2020, 14 disciplines in our hospital were selected as the top 100 in the country.
The hospital has actively assumed social responsibility, reflecting its social responsibility of large national public hospitals in major events such as the fight against poverty, against the COVID-19 epidemic and the H7N9 avian influenza. Ma Xiaowei, director of the National Health Commission (then deputy director of the National Health and Family Planning Commission) gave the hospital high praise during his visit: "Nowadays, the AHZMU has been a microcosm of the achievements in the reform and development of national public hospitals. The level of medical technology, the degree of connotation construction and informatization have shown that the hospital is a modern large-scale tertiary hospital in line with international standards.” The hospital will continue to adhere to its motto of “being Benevolent, Accommodating, Professional, Virtuous”, and uphold the medical ethics and revolve around its tenet— “Respect Life, Heal the Wounded and Rescue the Dying, Work for the Needs of People”. It will inherit the culture of Zunyi Medical University, and promote the spirit of Dalian Medical University, and strive to build a “top in China, influential in the world” research hospital.
